30 Million year old wood….6/2024
30 million years ago in NZ and astroid/meteor hit the earth and leveled the forest like a wheat field after a really bad storm. The trees laid, forming a bog, for all these years. No some in NZ are removing the trees from the bogs, I believe, to reclaim the land.
I was gifted a small piece of the spelted kuari wood from my friend in NZ!!! It took me over a year to decide what I wanted to do with this piece of wood that once lived with the dinosaurs, knowing I would only have one shot at it.
I should have known better because regardless of what I would have liked to have done with the piece, the wood always has it own agenda and the wood, always, gets its own way!
I cleaned the entire lathe area and went about capturing any of the 30 million year old shavings and dust created while turning the bowl.
After capturing the shavings and dust, I mixed them with gold resin which, very much to my surprise does not even show itself once everything was mixed together.
The crazy part is that the blank and bowl created from the shavings is twice the size of the original piece of wood!!! it ended up looking like burl!!!
I am obsessed with the spelted kuari wood! It flashes like tigers eye. Just how does one go about pricing a 30 million year old piece of wood?!?!
